Visual Query Builder can filter based on distance and calculate distance between points.
In this example, we’ll select open stores and the competitors within 5 miles of those stores. Only those stores with at least one competitor within 5 miles will be selected.
- Choose stores
- Choose the stores’ fields to include in the query
- Add one or more rules to the store table. Note: at least 1 rule must be used in addition to the Within Distance rule.
- Add the “Within Distance” rule.
- The Within Distance rule is at the bottom of the list.
- Choose the distance.
- In this example, the distance rule will be 1 mile.
- The Within Distance rule is at the bottom of the list.
- Select the surrounding entities – these are the points within the distance rule from the step above.
- In this example, we will choose competitors.
- In this example, we will choose competitors.
- Choose the surrounding entities’ fields.
- In this example, we are selecting from competitors

- Add one or more rules to the surrounding entities (competitors) table. Note: at least 1 rule must be used.
- Press Submit
- Export the results to Excel – note that the Table and Map buttons are disabled.
- Each record in the results displays a competitor within 1 mile of a store. The distance is in the field on the far right side of the Excel file.
